7 Essential Checks Before Renting a Car
7 Essential Checks Before Renting a Car
Before driving away in a rental car, taking a few minutes to check the rental conditions and vehicle can help prevent misunderstandings and unexpected costs.
1. Review the Rental Agreement
Check pickup and return times, driver requirements, additional-driver conditions, deposits, mileage limits, cancellation rules and any applicable additional charges.
2. Understand Insurance and Protection
Review the protection included in your reservation, any applicable excess and important exclusions. Coverage may differ depending on the rental package.
3. Check the Fuel Policy
Confirm how much fuel the vehicle has at pickup and what level is required at return. Also verify the correct fuel type before refueling.
4. Inspect Existing Damage
Check the bodywork, bumpers, wheels, windows, mirrors and interior. Make sure existing damage is recorded on the official vehicle condition report.
5. Check Tires, Lights and Basic Functions
Familiarize yourself with the lights, indicators, wipers, air conditioning, parking brake, multimedia controls and other essential functions before leaving.
6. Verify Mileage and Fuel Level
Compare the dashboard mileage and fuel level with the information recorded in your rental documents. For an electric vehicle, check the battery charge level.
7. Understand the Return Conditions
Know where and when to return the vehicle, the required fuel or charge level and the procedure for after-hours returns if applicable.
Additional Drivers and Documents
Make sure all authorized drivers are properly included in the rental agreement and that you have the required driving licence, identification and payment documents.
Airport Rentals
Check the exact pickup location and allow enough time to return the vehicle before your departure flight.
Renting Abroad
Review local traffic regulations, toll systems, parking rules and any requirements for international driving documents before traveling.
